Seek Not And You Shall Find

If I hadn't stumbled into an old, used bookshop last weekend... 

... I wouldn't know the difference between a Peter Funk and a House Larry... 

... I'd have no idea that I could have ordered a garbo garbo for breakfast... 

... that a beer jerker could be a real pretzel bender... 

... or that a blow for canines has nothing to do with rest stops at a dog race. 

That's because I picked up a $3 dictionary of American Slang published in 1960—a book I may have absolutely no purpose for, and yet absolutely couldn't live without. 

I never would have found it unless I hadn't been looking for it—which is exactly the case with so many things that require creative thinking rather than encyclopedic knowledge. 

Google, Amazon and so many other resources are great for finding fast answers to questions. But they, by design, filter everything else out. 

To foster greater creativity in work and life, we need to seek out more old, used bookshops, both real and metaphoric.

Among other things it helped me rediscover last weekend: Although I'm a little worn out from writing this summer, I'll never grow weary of searching for exactly the right word.
