“Our First Challenger is Self-Employed”

Kudos to Design Observer for posting this quirkishly compelling clip of Frank Lloyd Wright appearing on “What’s My Line?” in 1956.

The video is about nine minutes long, but well worth watching, whether you’re a Wright devotee or detractor.

Among the questions posed to the then 89-year-old architect: “Do these people (clients) come to you?” Wright responds, “They must. I have never gone to them.”

When asked “do you use your hands?” Wright replies with curmudgeonly bemusement, “absolutely.”

I wonder how many creative people could answer both questions with the same unqualified conviction today.
