Why Lawyers Shouldn’t Write Copy

If you stay at a Courtyard by Marriott hotel, you no longer have to trip over the USA Today when you leave your room in the morning. In fact, the hotel will even give you a 75-cent credit.

But you’ll only learn that if you read this tiny type on the back of your room key holder. (Not easy; and who is looking there anyway?)

This copy is so poorly written that I wonder if it wasn’t done this way on purpose, so fewer people “opt out.”

A friendlier option: “If you’d prefer not to receive USA Today in the morning, just let us know. We’ll even credit your room 75 cents.”
