Folding Up the Financial Supermarket

Back in the 90s, I was invited to pitch the creative for one of the soon-to-be-behemoth bank/brokerage/ insurance companies.

The client gave an elaborate in-person brief about the cross-selling opportunities for the new “one-stop-shopping” company.

When he was done, I asked what I thought was an innocent question that lost me the job: “Do consumers really want this?”

Today, as Citigroup (not the client, BTW) becomes the latest financial supermarket forced to dimantle its operations, I got my answer.
