Take Your Thumb Off That Send Button

BlackberryDrivingBlackLine.jpgLast week, while driving to school, I got an e-mail from a client: “What do you think about these designs?”

Because he was facing a tight deadline, I pulled off the highway and “replied to all” on my Blackberry.

I wasn’t doing my client a favor. (Or to the group that developed the designs.) My instant feedback—and unfocused direction—actually helped steer the project off course, rather than accelerating the process.

PDAs are great tools for answering questions like “Are you free at 3?” or “Did you really sign off on that $10,000 cappuccino machine?”

But creative queries require more thoughtful decision-making and feedback. That’s when instant messaging really can be “all thumbs.”
